Hi, Jay,

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts offers a
fifty-minute, docent-facilitated writing program in
the galleries called "Visual Voices." We have one
version for grades 6-8 and another for grades 9-12.
In the 6-8 program, the students do exercises using
adjectives to create similes inspired by artwork,
complete a descriptive sensory inventory, then write a
haiku poem. For grades 9-12, the students create
similes, then turn them into metaphors, complete a
descriptive sensory inventory, then write a cinquain
poem. All of the exercises take place in the galleries
and students select the artworks they wish to write
about. If you would like some more details, you are
welcome to contact me at work at
