Managing the Arts

Survey the principal tasks, concerns, and skill requirements of the
not-for-profit arts manager. Topics include the history of the arts and arts
management in the United States; legal obligations of the board;
organizational structures; fundraising; audience development; economic
development and the arts; working with artists; the budget process;
personnel issues; programming; developing partnerships; planning; advocacy;
and job searches. Prerequisite: This course is a suggested prerequisite for
all others in the certificate program. Other courses may be taken concurrently.

FACULTY BIO
Wanda Bershen, President RDP, has been curator and Dept head at the Jewish
Museum, consultant to state arts councils for New Jersey, New York and
Pennsylvania & director of the first arts services organization for media
arts (NAMAC). Her company RDP consults on planning, marketing and
fundraising for arts, cultural & educational organizations. She has
developed projects with Brooklyn Museum of Art, American Museum of the
Moving Image, Film Society of Lincoln Center, & BAM. She has taught at
Rutgers, Temple, and Philadelphia College of Art and written for American
History Review, Artforum, & Film Quarterly.
