The McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont, Texas held a curator's circle seminar yesterday on the basics of collection management. The assistant curator Deborah Gannon had great materials and good advice to offer. Perhaps if you contact her she'll send you some of the information she gave to the attendees. Good luck,

Lindsey Richardson

When I developed a collections policy a few years back, I found Marie Malaro's book on museum law very helpful. Also in the 1990s "Hands On" the newsletter of the children's museum association (probably not the association's formal name) had an issue devoted to collections and collections policy that I found most useful. Unfortunately these documents remain packed so I cannot give you succinct citations.

We are a foundation in a community of 350,000 building a regional history museum. There is no local archive or artifact repository of any magnitude; local materials have usually gone to one of several institutions in the state capital. We have a library/research room (1800 sq.ft) and limited archival storage (8000 sq.ft) in the proposed plan, and would like help in developing a collection policy.

Since this is my first inquiry to the listserve, I don't know how specific (or wordy) I should be. If anyone might have suggestions, I can supply more details as needed.
