What you choose to do depends in large measure on the nature of the
collection and what you intend to do with it, what kinds of information are
stored and what activities will touch upon the collection.

Speaking as a consultant in these matters I (naturally) suggest that you
retain a consultant in museum and collections management to help you choose
a database system. Without going so far as to recommend myself, I will
suggest that you contact the Museum Computer Network
(http://world.std.com/~mcn/MCN.html) and consult their directory of
consultants and vendors. If your needs are simple you may be able to
choose a database system without the aid of a consultant.
