I have recently taken on the job of archivist and collection manager for 
a church with a mixed collections of  documents and objects. As I began 
working with the collection, I came across what seemed to me an unusual 
item. It is an envelope containing the ashes of the original mortgage of 
the church. They are what remained after the document was ceremoniously 
burned some years ago; an event mentioned prominently in the church's 
published history and recorded in both photographic and written records.
   I am trying to determine what special conservation steps need to be 
taken. Several of the church members have expressed a desire to have 
them available for "display." I can think of a number of directions that 
I can go with this, and suspect that some type of encapsulation will be 
the best step (conservation but allowing the handling of the "object" 
without fear of damage by a sudden sneeze) ;-). I am open to 
suggestions  as to issues that I may not have thought of yet.
