An all-day symposium is being held on May 3rd in conjunction with the
exhibition Leaving for the Country:  George Bellows at Woodstock (April
13-June 22), both organized by the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY.

National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates will be the keynote speaker in
an all-day symposium examining Bellows's Woodstock years. In addition to
novels and short stories, Oates is the author of George Bellows: American
Artist (Ecco Press, 1995). Joining her are four other scholars:
*       Virginia M. Mecklenburg, senior curator at the Smithsonian American
Art Museum, speaks on "Bellows before Woodstock"
*       Mark White, assistant professor of art history at Oklahoma State
University, discusses "Bellows's Women: History as a Feminine Construction"
*       Marjorie B. Searl, MAG chief curator and exhibition co-curator
speaks on "Why Woodstock?"
*       Ronald Netsky, chair of the art department at Nazareth College and
exhibition co-curator speaks on "Bellows's Woodstock Landscapes and the
Question of Modernism"
