FYI...

Although you might not want to purchase expensive equipment, digital labs use
special scanners, like the OMNISCAN 10000 TT.  Since it is not a contact
scanner, the actual scanning laser piece never touches the pages of the books. 
Only the glass does.  The OMNISCAN was $60,000 the last time I checked, which is
too steep, unless it's purchased for a high-volume digital lab.  *But* your
friend could outsource the project to a lab with the proper equipment (if she
has a large enough number of books to scan).
