The purpose of the list is, I believe, explained in the FAQ, which can be

My recollection is that anything museum-related is fair game.

Short posts are preferred by some, as posts that re-copy page after page of
old posts are considered equally annoying.

The bottom of each post contains instructions for leaving.  An alternative
to having posts land in your mailbox is to visit the archives at
http://home.ease.lsoft.com/archives/museum-l.html and visit at one's leisure
(once a day is generally sufficient).  Here all posts are organized by
subject, so one can skip entire threads if they hold no special interest.
