Hi Kristen,

Here are a couple of random, Sunday morning thoughts.

It couldn't hurt to get your insurance agent AND a fine arts shipper involved in
the discussion. They can speak to both industry standards and to what would
make their lives easier as service providers.

Have you seen Larry Francell's "Loading Dock Design Criteria" on the Registrar's
Committee web site. Go to <http://www.rcaam.org> and look
under "Publications". Larry is a museum director now but used to be in the fine
art shipping business. PACIN might be able to help, too.

I think it is a common administrative procedure to ask staff to justify both
where they got information and why their information is applicable to the
current situation. I know it seems like the staff member's expertise is called
into question and only the word of an outside expert is heard. Maybe it's more
that the administration needs to prove to the Board or funder that these
criteria are indeed standards, not just a pie-in-the-sky wish list.

Sometimes anecdotal evidence can help...along the lines of horror stories from
colleagues who failed to address basics of dock design.

Hope this helps.
