Description of The Journey:

The Journey museum is a technologically sophisticated visual, auditory, and
tactile rendering of the story of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Beginning
with the geological formation of the area and the Lakota creation story, and
progressing from the age of the dinosaurs through all the phases of human
settlement, over 2.5 billion years of history are captured within the 48,000
square feet of The Journey.

This unprecedented breadth of information is made possible through the
incorporation of four outstanding collections: the Sioux Indian Museum, the
Minnilusa Pioneer Museum, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's
Museum of Geology, and the State Archaeological Research Center. Together with
the Duhamel collection of traditional Sioux artifacts, these exhibits are
presented to the public in an innovative, interactive context. The Journey is
a musem at which visitors can not only look and listen but also touch, explore,
and investigate. By offering a variety of perspectives on the history and
culture of the region, The Journey seeks to bring to life the voices of the
past, thereby encouraging visitors to draw their own conclusion about the
epochs in question.

The Journey is a reflection of the community in which it is set. Just as the
modern population of the Black Hills is a diverse and ever-changing body, the
history of the region is complex, and not without conflict. It is the mission
of the Jorney to bridge these gaps. By setting the American Indian history of
the area side by side with the pioneer or Euro-American account, it is hoped
that both systems of belief will be strengthened and maintained.
