Your best bet is to run this past USFWS agents who can check the individual species requirements against Federal and state laws (and international treaties as applicable). They can advise you on any further permits or paperwork that might be required. Documentation of specific dates, both from your donor's records and your own vis-à-vis the donation, will be vitally important. Pre-1973 (pre-ESA) collections are subject to different requirements than are post-1973 collections.

If a taxidermist had the necessary permits to collect and process specimens, whether domestic or international and then donated his collection of taxidermy specimens to a museum in the mid 1970's, does the museum need to have current permits to posses the specimens?  What if the museum does not actively collect specimens-by way of staff or donations. I would be especially curious to hear how museums with Natural History collections deal with the issue of permits, if needed.  Does one need a permit for each specimens and/or species, or can a museum have a blanket permit?



I have looked at AAM, CITES, USFW-federal and state, several listserves and have found nothing on how museums deal with old taxidermy collections in their possession when it comes to permits.
