Dear colleagues:

For our exhibits we generally have photographs on loan. We make a copy for
display purposes and return the original to its owner. Nowadays, we often
just scan the image and use a printout. This is normally done without a title
transfer.

Some examples in our collection are by now the only existing evidence, as the
originals were lovingly destroyed by their owners (we try to educate them on
proper storage, but…). Other photographs are very popular, get many requests
for duplication, and yes, we claim them as our collection.

How do other institutions handle these "non-artifact" photographs? Do you
accession them, create a special category? Any bother suggestions?

I would appreciate your advice.

Thank you,

Sabine Goerke-Shrode
Curator, Vacaville Museum
