Nantucket Historical Association
Visiting Research Scholar Program

In an effort to enhance the public=92s knowledge and understanding of the
heritage of Nantucket, Massachusetts, the Nantucket Historical Association
(NHA) is providing an opportunity for a graduate student in any field to
conduct research in the association=92s collections and holdings.=20

The NHA will provide housing in its historic house, 99 Main Street, for a=
 two-
to three-week period to be arranged between 2 January 1999 and 31 March
1999 of
the 1999-2000 academic year.=20

NHA Visiting Research Scholars will be expected to produce an article=
 suitable
for publication in the summer edition of Historic Nantucket, the NHA=92s
quarterly
journal. Recipients of the award will receive a stipend of $200.00 per week,
and a one-year membership in the Nantucket Historical Association.=20

The NHA is the principal repository of Nantucket history, with extensive
archives, collections of historic properties, and art and artifacts that
broadly illustrate Nantucket=92s past.

The Edouard A. Stackpole Library and Research Center at the Nantucket
Historical Association contains a rich collection of primary and secondary
sources that document all facets of Nantucket=92s historycultural, social,
economic, and spiritualfor more than three centuries. Almost 400 manuscript
collections relate to Nantucket individuals and families, ships, businesses
and
trades, churches, schools, and organizations.=20

The NHA art and artifacts collections include paintings, drawings, prints,
baskets, silver, whaling tools and artifacts, scrimshaw, furniture, and
textiles. Particular strengths of the collections lie in artifacts that
document Nantucket=92s whaling industry.

Topics of research for recent scholars have included whalemen in the=
 Pacific,
women at sea, scrimshaw, samplers, local artists, Nantucket=92s=
 architectural
heritage, Quakerism, Native Americans, the African-American and Cape Verdean
community, and abolitionism.=20

To apply, send a full description of the proposed project, a preliminary
bibliography, complete resume, and the names and addresses of three
references.
Preference will be given to applicants proposing to pursue previously
neglected
topics or new approaches to, or interpretations of, previously treated=
 topics.

Application deadline October 31, 1998. Applicants will be notified by=
 November
31, 1998.=20
