There's a nice summary page of the whole GIF controversy:
http://www.xmission.com:80/~mgm/gif/

I pulled it off comp.infosystems.www.providers (and you thought this
list was busy!).

If you're wondering what this has to do with museums, some of us
are sitting with megs of GIFs on our servers and the announcement
sounded like an attempt by big business to derail access to gopher
and web sites. It still may be that though more likely it's an
attempt by a drowning company (Unisys) to save themselves. It does
show the power of the net to rally people. Intel never would have
caved in on the Pentium controversy without it. Museums should keep
this in mind, particularly if you find yourself staring at a
billionaire computer software geek at trustee meetings.
