I think that is a line (or very close to it) that is used in any
business/organization/etc in the world. The USAF is divided into
separate commands -- it was always either "wait until you get into
thre 'real' air force," or "now you're in the 'real' air force. Or the
ultimate, "wait until you become a civilian and join the 'real'
world."

Now I'm in college -- can't wait until I graduate and enter the 'real'
world.
