Dear list,
 
I have a collegue interested in a drawing of Toussaint L' Ouverture.  In the picture, Toussaint is standing with a book in his left hand and a sword in his right.  The sword is unsheathed and the tip is touching the ground, in front of his feet.  (The picture is apparently based off of a statue of Oliver Cromwell that stands in front of Parliament.)  We have heard rumors that a sword touching the ground should have some sort of meaning, but we have not found any information.  Does anyone know of the signficance in having the sword touch the ground?
