Considering the solvents you have already tried, Have you given
 some thought to mecanichal (i.e. scalpel) in the hands of a very
careful and skilled conservator?

I really appreciate the help from everyone! I have used quite a
number of solvents: paint thinner(mineral spirits),acetone,
naptha,Xylene, the dried latex removers such as OOPS, Goo
Gone,"Goof Off", etc. I tried some metal polishes along with the
standard gun cleaning solvents and treatments.  Everything so far
is destructive to the orginal painted sections of the gun.  The
worst problem is on the sled mount which is completely black
painted(original finish).  Phil White came up with a good formula
of acetone and varsol I will attempt.  It would all be so easy if
the gun and mount were treated with a parkerized or blued finish
as I don't think any of the above would harm it. It also appears
that the original black paint and the overspray is the same type
of paint. Many thanks again, I'll keep everyone posted on this
