Hi Kelli,
The catalog number should contain the accession number if you are using the 
standard that most museums use.  i.e. the catalog number of 2007.8.9 
contains the accession number 2007.8
We always label with the full catalog number.  We print out our numbers from 
an Excel spreadsheet because we can get smaller fonts than those available 
from Microsoft Word.  Hope this helps.
