Hi,
I have copied several records to my computer directly from the record.
What I did was play the record on a turntable and I had a converter cable
to go from the out port on the back of my turntable to the microphone port
on my computer. I used a computer program called Cooledit to record it on
my computer. I have only moderate computer skills and no real formal
education in computers and had no problem doing it. When you do this, you
only have to play it once and then put the record away. It might put the
slightest amount of wear on the record by playing it once, but if the
purpose of acquring it was to get the information off it, then it is
perfectly acceptable museum practice to do so.
