Hi Joshua,

Similar incidents have occurred here a couple times over the years. Our conservators tell me it is a matter of finding the right solvent/solvent combination that will remove the paint and not damage the underlying patina/coating. It should certainly not be simply scrubbed off.

If it seems like it might be a common thing for mindless cretins to deface the bell(s), you might consider treating them as outdoor bronze sculptures and have them coated. This will help prevent permanent damage by providing a clear barrier to the paint as well as maintaining the metal surface long term.

I can put you in contact with our conservation team if you would like. I am sure there are some qualified people in your area as well.

Subject: Graffiti on Bells

We have a bell outside on exhibit and unfortunately it has been tagged a
couple times by the local population. Does anyone have any
recommendations to removing graffiti from such objects?

Best regards,
