It is certainly not too demanding that you be paid for the time you are
working. It is standard practice to pay couriers for the entire time they
are engaged to accompany art. You might present your employer with a flat
rate for the project (as a contractor), rather than agree to an hourly rate
for only part of the project. I believe this is a common practice with
contract registrars. Your time is certainly worth something and you should
be compensated.
