MUSEUMS ON ISLANDS

Dates: Thursday and Friday, 15 and 16 September 2005

Venue: Electricity Museum, Casa da Luz, Funchal, Madeira

Objectives
To investigate the need for a common strategy for island museums
To reflect on the social responsibility of island museums towards the island
community
To define the role of island museums in the tourist industry
To set up a network for the exchange of best practices

Background to the subject Island communities differ from continental
communities. From generation to generation the natives have fostered and
mostly still foster their cultural heritage, traditions, customs and habits.
They love their island. The kinship between families is kept alive, even
when members emigrate. The isolated position of islands has stimulated the
strong feelings of the indigenous populations, in places as far apart as the
Azores to Cyprus, and from Malta to Iceland.

Many island museums present their story from geological times to the present
day. Professional and amateur researchers describe the landscape, the
environment and the history from the arrival of man onwards. Modern issues
such as the impact of global climate change are only rarely mentioned, but
for some islands the effects might be disastrous.

Almost all island museums concentrate on the uniqueness of their own island.
They do this by offering the visitor an overview of the political, social
and religious history, the arts, agriculture, fishing, tourist and other
industries, whatever was or is the main source of income. The museum
focuses on how the island sees itself and how it is perceived abroad.

Participants: mainly museum professionals working in the (island) museum
field. Those attending are requested to collect material relevant to the
above objectives and to assemble case studies for discussion during the
meeting.

Language: the work sessions will be conducted in English.

Registration fee: 50 € plus accommodation at Reid’s Hotel, Funchal at a very
special rate of around 100 € per night
