Dear Jennifer Lynn and other students:

Yes, take the accounting class, even though you may find it very boring and
difficult. It will be invaluable when (a) you have to write grants for
education programs that you want to do at your museum, large or small, and
(b) you have to keep track of expenses so that you can write the final report
for your programs that go to the funders.

Unless you only want to work part-time as a presenter for school programs,
and never be "DIrector of Education," you will need the accounting. You
have got to
understand how a yearly budget works so that you can justify your
department's expenses if you are in a government-sponsored institution or
even in a small, private
non-profit.

Having the accounting class also makes you more desirable as a new hire. It
also opens the doors to lots of different jobs in the museum world, and in
life in general, should you get tired or burned-out from running public
programs and school tours.
Someday, twenty years from now, you may decide that you want more
independence and you may want to start your own business or non-profit.
Knowing accounting is one less obstacle to successfully pursuing those dreams.

Hope this helps. Hang in there and have a great year!
