To follow up on Amy's comment on public art in Philly: Philadelphia was the
first city in the US to have a public art ordinance (1959) and it really
makes a difference in the feel of the city...not because of the traditional
statuary, of which there is a ton, but in the willingness of the residents
to accept artistic interventions into their daily lives.

I love the house installation in Franklin Court--it's my favorite public art
piece in the city; also, please do not miss the 2000+ murals done through
the Mural Arts Program (since the mid-'80s). There is a great Stephen
Antonakos neon piece atop an apartment building in Franklintown and the same
building has wrought-iron gates commissioned from, I think, Albert Paley (if
not, they certainly look like Paley's work). Not to mention the Oldenburg
clothespin sculpture across from city hall.

God, I love Philadelphia. (I went to college outside of the city, oh, over
20 years ago)

Subject: Philly museums: a casual review

I hope this is appropriate: over on H-Museum folks occasionally post
formal reviews of exhibits. My family just spent a few days down in
Philadelphia and we hit a few of the museums, and I thought I'd come
out of my lurking to share my impressions of 'em.

First off, I had no clue there were so many. And there's a *ton* of
public art around also. I never made it to the Art Museum, which has
an armor gallery that I'd like to see.
