Curator, Joel Lane Museum House

The Joel Lane Museum House invites applications for the Curator of the
Museum.  The Joel Lane Museum House has been restored to its appearance in
1790-95 and is the site of numerous historic meetings. It is a privately
owned non-profit located in Raleigh, NC, preserving, interpreting, and
exhibiting Wake County's oldest house, its grounds, and dependencies.

The Curator is responsible for house and garden tours, education programs,
collections maintenance, and administrative duties. Degree in history or
related field; two years experience working at either a museum or historical
property preferred. Must be able to work independently, have good people
skills, and enjoy working with the public and volunteers.

Joel Lane Museum House
Curator Job Description

The curator is an employee of the Joel Lane House, Inc., a North Carolina
nonprofit corporation, and works at the pleasure of and under the direction
of the president and board of directors (including committee chairmen)
thereof.

The priorities of the Joel Lane Museum House curator are established by the
board of directors to affirm the mission as set forth in the by-laws of Joel
Lane House, Inc. Article 1 Section 2.

The Joel Lane Museum House curator's priorities will be:

1.	Possess general knowledge of 18th century history and Joel Lane
House and Lane family genealogy in particular. 
2.	House and garden tours.
3.	Education programs.
4.	Collections maintenance, repair and preservation.
5.	Administrative.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

House, Collections and Grounds

1.	Daily (when open) check security and condition of the house,
outbuildings and grounds.
2.	Report as necessary to appropriate committee chair any maintenance
issue, any items requiring repair, replacement, restoration, augmentation,
or other attention. Maintain the collection, reporting to acquisition
committee chair when repairs are needed.  
3.	Notify and confer with each committee chair about items that affect
that committee.
4.	Schedule and supervise repair/maintenance persons as authorized by
the board or appropriate chair.  Coordinate with committee chair as needed.
Coordinate with committee chair and treasurer about payment.
5.	Daily (when open) perform light maintenance such as straightening
furniture, pictures, dusting, sweeping, trash removal, bathroom cleanup,
etc. Replace light bulbs as needed. Also purchase cleaning supplies, paper
products, trash bags, yard pest spray, etc.
6.	Prepare and maintain collections cards and accessions information
book
7.	Coordinate garden and grounds maintenance in cooperation with the
garden chair. Pick up trash daily.
8.	Supervise dependency rental, rent collection, tenant behavior.
9.	Conduct disaster preparation and recovery. Disasters include
hurricanes, tornados, ice, and lightning. 


Tours

1.	Keep house open and provide tours in costume to walk-in and
scheduled visitors at such normal operating hours as shall be set by the
board.
2.	Schedule and conduct off-site presentations in costume to schools
and other groups.
3.	Schedule, staff and supervise special group tours, in costume,
preferably during normal operating hours, and at such special times as shall
be approved of authorized by the board.  Coordinate with appropriate
committee chair.
4.	Keep an accurate daily tally of visitors and fees collected and
number of volunteers as a separate figure.
5.	Sell gift shop items and collect and track revenue.  
6.	Include brief summary in board report.


Special Events

1.	Schedule and attend/supervise special events such as weddings, other
social occasions, seminars, etc. as approved by the board, including the
contracting thereof, collect fees, prepare/supervise site integrity
maintenance before and after the event.
2.	Receive and administer return of rental fee and damage deposits as
appropriate.
3.	Promote the JLMH as a special events destination for parties,
weddings, etc. in conjunction with the public relations chair.
4.	Coordinate with special events chair for Christmas and July 4th open
house events.

Volunteers

1.	Coordinate with volunteer chair to ensure adequate personnel.
2.	Recruit and train volunteers (docents and others).
3.	Augment, recruit, train and provide overall supervision of the adult
and junior docent programs as directed by the volunteer committee and
education committee chairmen.

Education

1.	Develop on-site programs such as craft demonstrations, reenactments,
activities for the July 4th and Christmas open houses, etc. in cooperation
with the special events chair.
2.	Present off-site programs to school classes, civic organizations,
historical association, etc. 
3.	Prepare and distribute teacher workbooks.
4.	Attend and represent JLMH at historical societies and community
organizations (i.e., Raleigh Heritage Trail).

Administrative

1.	Coordinate with the publicity chair about press releases and other
publicity opportunities.
2.	Coordinate with the membership chair about activities related to the
Joel Lane Historical Society, including annual membership drive and social
and fundraising events.
3.	Attend meetings of various groups such as the Raleigh Visitors
Center and Raleigh Heritage Trail.  
4.	Write articles as requested for the "Parchment Press."  Coordinate
writing, editing, printing, prepare mailing labels and supervise bulk
mailing.
5.	Prepare and distribute correspondence as requested or authorized by
the board. Collect and distribute mail.  Answer when necessary.
6.	Receive and distribute gift shop sales receipts and tour fees to the
treasurer. Assist treasurer to code receipts, payables, etc. Receive and
distribute outbuilding rent to the treasurer. Receive and distribute any
other contributions to the treasurer.
7.	Prepare monthly and yearly statistics report, reconcile monthly
records, on visitors, home, volunteer hours.
8.	Submit a brief written report to the board prior to each scheduled
board meeting.  Attend staff and board meetings as requested.
9.	Maintain the database and mailing lists, recording membership
renewals, donations, etc. Keep websites updated.
10.	Answer telephone, keep up with filing, email.
11.	Prepare the curator's budget and submit to the treasurer in March of
each year for inclusion in the next fiscal years' budget planning.
12.	Submit monthly timesheets to the personnel chair by the 5th of the
following month.
