Hampton Roads would be a great choice for a vacation or museum-sightseeing trip. Its located in Southeastern Virginia is home to a great many attractions and museums covering countless topics of history, science, biology, and art.

Virginia Beach has three city operated historic houses, some of the oldest in the region, which include the Adam Thoroughgood House, the Lynnhaven House, and the Francis Land House. (http://www.vbgov.com/vgn.aspx?vgnextchannel=09f221b2d1bcc010VgnVCM1000006310640aRCRD) There are several other privately operated houses including the Ferry Plantation, Pleasant Hall, Dewitt Cottage and more (http://virginiabeachhistory.org/houses.html). Virginia Beach is also home to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, the brand new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, and more. The Old Coast Guard Station can also be found on the boardwalk and has fascinating exhibits on the little-known Surfmen (http://www.oldcoastguardstation.com/).

Norfolk, only a 15-20 minute drive, has several historic houses which include the beautifully furnished and landscaped Hermitage Foundation Museum (www.hermitagefoundation.org), The Chrysler Museum of Art , http://www.chrysler.org/index.asp, The Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe, http://www-tradoc.army.mil/museum/ <http://www-tradoc.army.mil/museum/> , The Historic St. Paul's Church which still has canon balls in its walls from when Lord Dunmore bombarded Norfolk from the Chesapeake Bay (http://www.greatwhitefleet.org/jamestown/036a.htm <http://www.greatwhitefleet.org/jamestown/036a.htm> ), the Hampton Roads Naval Museum (http://www.hrnm.navy.mil/ <http://www.hrnm.navy.mil/> ), and much more.

On the Peninsula, about an 45 min-1 hour) drive from Virginia Beach, there is the Mariner's Museum (http://www.mariner.org/) in Newport News, and the Virginia Living Museum (www.thevlm.org/). From the Peninsula, it is only a short drive (40 min-1 hour, depending on traffic) to the Historic Triangle which is home to Colonial Williamsburg (http://www.history.org/), and Historic Jamestown, one of the first English settlements in the New World (www.apva.org/history/index.html, http://www.americas400thanniversary.com/, http://www.nps.gov/jame/) and Yorktown (http://www.yorkcounty.gov/tourism/), some of our nation's most important historic sites.

Virginia also has one of the best museum associations in the country called the Virginia Association of Museums (imagine that!) which can be found at www.vamuseums.org.

In addition to all of these great museums and sites, there are plenty of opportunities for shopping (there are 5 or 6 shopping malls in this region), hiking, museum-less sightseeing, wonderful restaurants, and lots of other things to see and do.

Subject: Why Should I Visit YOUR Museum?

Ok, I need your help. I entered a contest at work and was told yesterday I won two first-class, round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in North America on Northwest Airlines. Pretty impressive, huh? The catch is, it comes with hefty tax fees of $400 a piece, or a total of $800 as a hit on my pay. I need to give them an answer tonight as to whether or not I will take them, so your help is needed.

Tell me why I should come to visit your museum. My mind is open as to areas (to a point), but, since museums are an important part of my life, and visiting good museums would serve to enhance any trip I took, I'd like to hear from you folks why I should go to your area instead of another. I think this could be a fun exercise in marketing, and if you don't convince me, you may convince somebody else on list. More than that, you may help one another in exchanging creative marketing techniques.

I've not decided whether I'm going to take them, whether I'm going to give them to my kids, or exactly where I would go, so please help me out by giving it your best shot!

Thanks for considering my request.

(This could get fun depending upon your answers.)
