I agree with Shana. In the upper levels here the personnel tend to be
men. Also, I attended the executive director's breakfast at the AASLH
and it was primarily all men. At my table of eight people- only two
were women.

Marielle,

It's interesting that you say that. My perception has been quite the
opposite. I worked for an arts institution in the New York metro area
and I
found that there were many women in the field, but that the
directors/executives were predominantly men--especially in larger
institutions. It was always a HUGE deal when a woman was appointed to a

senior curator position or executive directorship--all over the trade
publications. Of course I'm mostly referring to art museums as that was
the
area in which I was most engaged.

Shyra--I hope these comments are of use to you. I think this topic is a

pretty interesting one. Over the years, I've often had conversations
with
colleagues about it as part of a larger discussion of salaries and
benefits
for museum employees verses the public sector, as well as the disparity
of
compensation between senior executives of major arts institutions and
their
employees.

I'll be interested to hear what your research turns up.

Regards,
Shana O'Hara
