The following is a letter from Mary Chute, Acting Director of the
federal Institute of Museum and Library Services:

Dear Colleague,

The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Corporation for
Public Broadcasting are working together on a new initiative, the
Partnership for a Nation of Learners (PNL). Its shared goal is to
encourage and enable museums, libraries and public broadcasters to work
together to address locally-identified educational needs and
opportunities. The initiative provides grant support, professional
development activities, and an online resource center. We have learned
from many of you that collaboration is a critical skill in a changing
information environment, and fundamental to positioning your institution
as an essential community resource.

On Wednesday, November 30th between 12:30 and 2:00 PM ET, the
Partnership for a Nation of Learners will sponsor a national/local
COMMUNITY COLLABORATION VIDEOCONFERENCE designed to help initiate,
strengthen or renew relationships among local museums, libraries, public
broadcasting stations and public radio stations. One-third of all
public television stations in the nation have agreed to downlink a
PBS-fed videoconference and to host a group of fellow participants from
these and other community organizations. Public television stations in
AK, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, MI, MN, MT, NC, ND,
NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, and Puerto Rico are
participating.

Our national host Ray Suarez from The Newshour with Jim Lehrer will,
along with our guests: introduce the Partnership for a Nation of
Learners initiative, what it has to offer you and your community, and
its grant opportunities; help museums, libraries and public broadcasters
get to know one another and each other's assets, begin to talk about
pressing needs in your community, and explore how you might work
together to solve them.

For a list of participating stations and to get in touch with the
station contact by NOVEMBER 17 if you'd like to attend, please visit the
Partnership for a Nation of Learners Web site at:

Sincerely,

Mary Chute
