ACUMG Annual Conference April 25, 1999
"Uncommon Classroom: Accessing the Museum"
This year the Association of College and University Museums and
Galleries turns its attention to the role college and university museums
perform as educators within the academic setting. The day-long
conference engages a roster of experienced scholars, curators, and
educators who will address subjects and practices surrounding our
theme. The morning program begins on a prophetic note from Dr. Harold
Skramstad in his address, "The University Museum in the New Century".
Dr. Skramstad is a respected and well known leader of the arts and
humanities; he is the former President of Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield
Village; former Director of the Chicago Historical Society; Vice
President of AAM (1984-88); a member of the National Council on the
Humanities, and the recipient in 1992 of the Charles Frankel Prize (now
known as the National Humanities Medal). Following Dr. Skramstad's
remarks, concurrent sessions will entertain the comments of: Diana
Matthias, Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame, and that of
Stephan Jost, Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, examining
museum/college interdisciplinary programs. Jenny Wilker of AMAM takes a
look at electronic publishing for museums, and Charles Mason and Amy
Kurlander discuss museum-based courses in the Oberlin College
curriculum. In the afternoon, our host, the Allen Memorial Art Museum,
will offer delegates an in-depth survey of the collection and associated
programs. The Allen Memorial Art Museum, founded in 1917 was the first
college art museum west of the Alleghenies. Now ranked among the finest
college or university collections in the nation, the AMAM is one of the
greatest cultural assets of Oberlin College. Over 11,000 objects span
the entire history of art from ancient Egypt to contemporary America.
Additional conference programs include optional tours of the Intermuseum
Conservation Association facilities, and the Weltzheimer/Johnson House
designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Continental breakfast, lunch, and a
special closing reception are also included in this day- long
conference. Forms can be obtained by contacting: Brigid Brink,
Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, 1335 Asp Ave, Norman, OK 73019.
