It is the responsibility of the owner of the object to provide proper documentation for it's origin - such as a bill of sale, customs clearance, any provenance information.

Most institutions these days have policies in regards to at least archaeological artifacts or antiquities that require documentation and proof of ownership before accepting such things as a donation to their collections.

It just makes common sense.

So the idea of a temporary or loan based exhibit on the typical things that soliders collect sounds like a great alternative idea.

I sort of remember hearing that there are still hard feelings and legal disputes over American civil war battle flags.

One man's booty is often another man's symbol. Keep that in mind.
