Dear Colleagues:

The first issue of "Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives
Professionals" is ready to go to press.  This first issue will contain the
following four feature articles as well as other material:

Archives and Museums: Balance and Development in Presidential Libraries
        SUSANNAH BENEDETTI, William M. Randall Library, University of North
Carolina at Wilmington

Critical Concepts concerning Non-living Collections
        STEPHEN L. WILLIAMS, Department of Museum Studies, Baylor

Collecting Theories: Mexican American Archives at the University of Texas,
Benson Latin American Collection (1974-2003)
        MARIA E. GONZALEZ, Preservation and Conservation Studies,
University of Texas at Austin

The Maverick Collector: The Method in the Madness of Peggy Guggenheim
        EMMA ACKER, University of Southern California, Los Angeles

Now that this first issue is going to press we are actively seeking more
high quality manuscripts from museum professionals,  faculty, and students
for the second number of the journal, which also will appear in 2004.  If
you know of appropriate manuscripts, please encourage the authors to submit
them to us.  I have placed our call for papers below if you have questions
about material that we would like to receive.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archive Professionals welcomes
manuscript submissions for its first issue, to be published in July 2004.
This new journal will be published by AltaMira Press already known as a
publisher of high quality books and other journals on museological topics.
An interdisciplinary journal for museums and archives, Collections will
provide information on handling, preserving, researching, and organizing
collections.  Both collection practices and theoretical debates are
welcome.  All papers appearing in this journal will receive peer review.

Curators, archivists, conservators, collections managers, preparators,
registrars, educators, students, and others are encouraged to submit their
work.  We accept articles of 15-25 manuscript pages, along with 3-6 page
opinion pieces, book reviews, and technical columns.  For further

multi-disciplinary journal for all aspects of handling, preserving,
researching, and organizing collections. Edited by Hugh Genoways of the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, /Collections/ will be both academic and
practical. Practitioners will be able to turn to the journal for the
most up-to-date research in collections management. In its pages, they
will find both professional guidance and theoretical grounding, drawn
from fields such as life science, art history, anthropology, history,
conservation, law, museum studies, and library science.

Two issues of /Collections/ will appear in 2004. In subsequent years,
issues will appear quarterly, in February, May, August, and November. We
are currently accepting submissions for the 2004 volume.
