The boating community is also starting to use GPS. LORAN, the
navigational system used by recreational boats, is being phased out
by 1997, to be replaced with a consumer-level version of GPS.
(At least, the US government has announced plans to discontinue LORAN
and replace it with GPS by 1997. Irate owners of LORAN systems may
raise enough ruckus to change things.)
