I echo the sentiments of Laura Casey. I don't recommend putting the number
on a separate piece of paper. This was done on a collection I used to work
with and, during the course of two collections moves and several
exhibitions, the numbers fell out of some of the books. Because we have a
large collection of ledgers and registers with similiar if not identical
records, matching artifact nymbrs and artifacts became problematic to say
the least. Reuniting artifact records with artifacts can be a long and
tedious job and, when you can gently mark the book with pencil, it seems
counter-productive to risk having to do it.
