Our dig has been an indoors activity in plastic tubs. The material we settled on 
was ground corn cob which you can get at feed stores. We found that it is clean, 
easy to sweep up, and acts like coarse sand. We have used a variety of 
"specimens" in it from plastic animals to laminated parts of skeletons.
