Greetings, my name is Lisa Lee and I am emailing you on behalf the Asian
Pacific American Program at the Smithsonian Institution.  The following text
is a copy of a calendar of events for the From Bento to Mixed Plate exhibit
we currently have displayed at the Arts & Industries Building.  The exhibit
is about Americans of Japanese ancestry in multicultural Hawai`i and runs
until November 30th.  All the events are free and open to the public.
Demonstration sessions with artists Ramon Camarillo, Bob Lubguban, and
Marcia Mau are all make-n-take events where visitors are invited to
participate and take their creations home with them.  Please pass this
calendar along to your staff and anyone you think would be interested.  We
would greatly appreciate any help you can provide in helping us publicize
these events (such as posting it in your website or newsletter).  If you

**July 10th**   Bob Lubguban, Traditional Hawaiian Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     A Filipino-Chinese Artist from Hawai'i, Bob Lubguban is a member
of the American Gourd Society who stresses tradition and      spirituality
through the practice and promotion of traditional      Hawaiian art forms.
Join us for a fascinating demonstration of      Lauhala Weaving.  Learn to
make your own figures and baskets      using long strips of hala leaves and
take them home with you.

**July 17th**   Marcia Karen Mau, Origami Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     A Yonsei-Chinese Origami Artist from Hawai'i, Marcia Mau is a
member of Origami USA, the British Origami Society, and the      Capital
Folders Club in Washington D.C.  Come be a part of the      first of five
demonstrations of the traditional art of Japanese      paper folding known
as Origami.  Using palaka paper, take home      your creation and start a
collection today.

**July 24th**   Ramon Camarillo, Ceramic Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Demonstration and Glazing at the Arts and
Industries Rotunda (on either side of the exhibit), Raku Firing      in the
East Parking Lot
     A Filipino-Spanish-Chinese Ceramic Artist from Hawai'i, Ramon
Camarillo recently exhibited in the Baltimore Clayworks- "D.C.      Clay"
Exhibition and is known for his large burnished pit-fired      vessels.
Today's demonstration will be the first of two sessions      of the Western
Style of the Japanese art of Raku Pottery.       Release the artist within
and glaze your own teacup and watch as      it is fired at a temperature of
roughly 1600 degrees in a      specially constructed kiln.  Then feel the
heat as it is removed      from the kiln and placed in a metal container
with combustible      materials (such as leaves or newspapers).  And
finally, revel in      the pride of taking home your own work of Art.

**July 31st**  Storybook Reading by Enid Odo, Teacher at Lowell School
     2:30PM and 3:30PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Beat the heat!  Come relax and listen to fascinating and exciting
children's stories from Japan.  This is a great opportunity for
children of elementary school age (5-12 years old) to learn about
multicultural Hawai'i and the stories told to Japanese American
children.

**August 7th**  Marcia Karen Mau, Origami Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Continue to add to your Origami collection, and join us for the
second of five origami demonstrations with Marcia Mau.

**August 14th** Ramon Camarillo, Ceramic Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Demonstration and Glazing at the Arts and
Industries Rotunda (on either side of the exhibit), Raku Firing      in the
East Parking Lot
     How much creativity can you muster up?  See what new and unique
designs will appear on your ceramic creation at the last of two
demonstration of Raku Pottery with Ramon Camarillo.

**August 21st** Storybook Reading
     2:30PM and 3:30PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Walking around the National Mall making your feet hurt?  Take a
load off and enjoy a lively rendition of Japanese children's      stories.
Aimed at elementary school aged children, but kids of      all ages are
welcome to join the fun!

**August 28th** Bob Lubguban, Traditional Hawaiian Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Are you musically inclined?  Or maybe you just like to make some
noise?  Join Bob Lubguban, a member of the American Gourd      Society, and
learn how to make Hawaiian nose flutes called Ipo      Hokeo Keo using
gourds.  Take home your creation and see what      kind of melodies you can
come up with.

**September 4th** Storybook Reading
     2:30PM and 3:30PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Let your imagination bring traditional Japanese children's      stories
to life.  Listen as volunteers educate and entertain you      with stories
of life in multicultural Hawai'i.

**September 11th**  Bob Lubguban, Traditional Hawaiian Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     What can be more beautiful than a bouquet of flowers?  How about      a
lei of flowers?!?  Learn to make your own Hawaiian leis using      ribbons,
strings, and raffia.  Make and take one home for      yourself, then
continue the fun and make one for someone special.
**September 18th**  Marcia Karen Mau, Origami Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Think you've become an expert at the Japanese art of paper
folding?  See what else you could learn at the third of five      Origami
demonstrations.  The magical hands of Marcia Mau will      pleasantly
surprise you.

     Come enjoy the scenery as Enid Odo charms you with tales heard by
Japanese American and other children in multicultural Hawai'i.

Joseph's School

exhibit)
     Tired of the same old bedtime stories?  Hear some new ones with
Nancy Szymczak while learning about the multicultural composition      of
Hawai'i.

**October 16th**  Bob Lubguban, Traditional Hawaiian Artist
     11:00AM to 3:00PM, Arts and Industries Rotunda (in front of the
exhibit)
     Do you know what Poi Balls are?  Find out and make your own using
cloth and yarn with Bob Lubguban.  Then stay and watch a special
performance of traditional Hawaiian hula dancing including poi      ball
numbers.

**October 23rd**  Storybook Reading by Enid Odo, Teacher at Lowell

     Expand your knowledge of Japanese and Japanese American cultures…
listen as children's stories are told for your pleasure.
