The Consortium for the Computer Interchange of Museum Information (CIMI
<http://www.cimi.org/cimi>) will host a one-day technical briefing on
the CIMI: Z39.50 Profile for Museum Collections Information. The
meeting will also include a presentation on the Aquarelle Project
<http://www-rocq.inria.fr/aqua/>, an overview of CIMI's Project CHIO
<http://cypress.dev.oclc.org:12345/CHIO>, CIMI Profile implementation
plans, and other information related to networked access to cultural
heritage information (see tentative agenda below).

The meeting will be held on Saturday, October 5, 1996 at the offices of
the European Workshop for Open Systems (EWOS) Secretariat in Brussels,
Belgium. The CIMI meeting follows the Z39.50 Implementors Group
meetings held earlier that week. EWOS has generously offered the use
of the Marie Curie Room in its offices: Rue de Stassart 36, 1050
Brussels. Specific directions for meeting will be provided to those
persons interested in attending the meeting. Please RSVP to William E.
Moen <[log in to unmask]> by September 23, 1996.

The meeting is intended for anyone interested in the use of the Z39.50
information retrieval protocol for search and retrieval of cultural
heritage information. CIMI has developed a draft Z39.50 application
profile for testing in its Project CHIO (cultural heritage information
online). A copy of the draft profile and an associated background
paper to the profile's development are available at the Z39.50
Maintenance Agency website:
<http://lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/agency/profiles/cimi2.html> -- the draft
Profile
<http://lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/agency/profiles/cimi1.html> -- the
background paper

The documents are also available via anonymous ftp at:
<ftp://ftp.cimi.org/pub/cimi/CIMI_Profile/>

The draft CIMI Profile will be implemented and tested in
1996-1997, and a revised Profile will be published in 1997, based
on implementation experience during 1996-1997. Comments on the
draft profile are welcome.

Proposed Agenda Items for CIMI Technical Briefing, October 5, 1996, 9am
- 5pm. The meeting will include presentations, discussions, and
question and answer periods. A number of experts on Z39.50 and
the CIMI Profile will be available at the meeting as resource
persons.
