The Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)is pleased 
to offer a NEW Book Arts workshop this spring.

"Working with Leather: Exposed Sewn Binding" with Bea Nettles
Dates: March 4-5, 2006 9-4PM daily.
Location: UIUC Campus, Noble Hall Room 20
Registration fee: $195 (includes $25 supply fee for leather, 
glue, boards, and paper) 
Note: UIUC staff, students, and alumni, as well as previous 
Book Arts workshop attendees, will be given a 10% discount.

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of working 
with leather binding, including tooling and multiple color 
inlays and paring. On the second day, a small blank book 
will be created by sewing with an exposed style stitch over 
cords or straps. No previous experience with working leather 
will be needed, but basic binding experience preferred.

Instructor: Professor Bea Nettles served as Chair of the 
Photography Program for fifteen years at the University of 
Illinois. She has over thirty years of college teaching 
experience and has lectured and taught workshops at over one 
hundred locations worldwide. She is a Senior University 
Scholar and has twice received National Endowment for the 
Arts Fellowships for her work in photography.

Her work can be found in major public collections including 
the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), The Metropolitan Museum of 
Art (NYC), and the International Museum of Photography in 
Rochester, NY. She is represented in several history texts 
including World History of Photography (Abbeville Press), 
Art Since 1940: Strategies of Being (Abrams), and The 
History of Photography: An Overview (Focal Press).

She is widely recognized for her innovations in the field of 
mixed media photography and photographic books. The 
autobiographical content of her work has paved the way for 
generations of younger artists to explore. More can be
