This is an interesting question - I don't know of any secondary sources
except possibly for Julie Brown's books, but the Army Medical Museum
began producing catalogues of their holdings in 166 - 4 years after
their establishment and these catalogues were placed on the exhibit
floor for use by visitors.  By 1876, at the Centennial Exposition in
Philadelphia we were producing specific catalogues for the exhibition
and they should be fairly easy for you to find.
