There is an article that you might want to look at. It deals with the
issues surrounding collecting contemporary political ephemera for museums.

David G. Orr and Mark R Ohno, "The Material Culture of Protest: A Case
Study in Contemporary Collecting," in _Twentieth-Century Popular Culture
in Museums and Libraries_ Fred E.H. Schroeder, ed. (Bowling Green: Bowling
Greeen University Press, 1981).

I believe there might also have been some other articles on this topic in
