According to The New Museum Registration Methods (chapter written by Terry
Segal), the Sharpie does not have good color value (i.e., it fades over
time). She recommends Rotring 17 Black and Pelican Drawing Ink FT Black.

BTW this chapter has all the information you need about marking objects. If
you need more the Registrars Commitee of the American Association of Museums
sells two workshop handbooks (Beyond Nail Polish I and II). Ordering
information can be found on the RC website (www.rcaam.org) under Benefits
(then click on Publications). The Illinois Association of Museums also
published an excellent two-part guide by Marianna Munyer. Contact Mary
Turner ([log in to unmask]) for more information.

Subject: B-72 and inks

Please advise!

Our Curatorial Assistant is trying to use B-72 for bottom and top coat when
labeling artifacts, however, it does not seem to work with the ink we are
using (Higgins engrossing ink). The ink seems to roll off the base coat and
smear when the top coat is applied.

She tried a Sharpie on another, which worked better. However, I have read
that you shouldn't use Sharpies.

If anyone is using B-72, please let me know what ink you use!

Thank you in advance!

Jill Brush
