Hi, Mark. Re your '08; The original rust blue or phosphate finishes of WWI
weapons are immune to solvents, but you will remove the 'patina' of old
oils, etc.(such as the old Cosmoline that gives M1 carbines that green look
when combined with iron phosphate). If the overspray is latex interior
paint, you can try gently scrubbing with non ammoniated household cleaners,
then thoroughly cleaning with a good water- displacing oil. If you need
something stronger, try one of the products made for stripping paint from
plastic models. If you can't find a supplier for the stripper, check with
Squadron Shop ([log in to unmask]).
If the white paint is enamel over a blued or phosphate finish, you can
dive right in with paint or laquer thinner, making sure not to get it any
place it shouldn't go.
If it is enamel over enamel, you're basically screwed. All you can do is
gently go over it with solvent, (NOT SANDPAPER) until you get down to the
original finish, at which point you either leave it alone, or decide about
applying new paint of the right type, color, and application technique
(spray, brush, fingers, whatever).
If you want, you can call me most days until 9pm (except 5-6 pm) (410)
837-7138.
Good Luck, and let me know how it goes. HF
