Hi, Kelly...Our collections policy is still in draft form, but currently
includes a short statement about the use of collections in exhibits. The
use of loaned items is addressed in a separate section on loans. In the
exhibits section we did think it important to address the physical
safety of objects. We stated that the collections manager would
evaluate each object for stability/soundness (i.e. can it safely
withstand the rigors of exhibition). We also stated that if "adequate
protection is not available, the item will not be displayed". (Keep in
mind that we are a small museum and have minimal environmental
protection in the galleries--probably not an issue for your museum!).
We also stated that exhibit logs will be maintained that will note the
use of each item and the overall objectives of each exhibit.

I'm sure we need to beef up this section and will be happy to hear input
from other museums!
