Museum Director position opening:  Port Isabel, Texas U.S.A.

The Port Isabel Historical Museum is accepting applications for a museum
director.  The announcement is provided below.  This new museum will open
on 12 October 1996 in the historic Champion Company Building,  built at the
turn of the century and near to prehistoric, Spanish exploration, colonial,
Mexican War, and Civil War sites.   Integrated, professional displays
depicting the area history are being prepared by Southwest Museum Services
of Houston, Texas.  The renovation, restoration, conservation, installation
of displays, and initial funding are through a federal grant from the Rio
Grande Valley Empowerment Zone, municipal funds, and private donations.
The museum director will be a city employee supervised by the city manager
and will receive city employment benefits.

The subtropical Port Isabel/South Padre Island area is a major tourist
destination and popular retirement community, located on the Gulf of Mexico
coast and a half-hour drive from Matamoras, Mexico.

MUSEUM DIRECTOR, PORT ISABEL HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The City of Port Isabel, Texas is seeking an experienced administrator for
a new museum.  Responsibilities will include planning, organizing, and
directing all museum operations and programs and acting as a historic
resources director for the city.  Will plan and administer annual budget
and grants; conduct ongoing fundraising; manage staff and  volunteers;
liaison with museum advisory board, regional historical and cultural
organizations, and regional educators.  Fundraising and marketing skills
are essential.  Requires minimum bachelor's degree and three years museum
and/or business administration experience. Spanish language fluency a plus.
