Manhattan hotels have gotten pretty pricey, even the "budget" ones.

We have stayed regularly at the Milburn Hotel, 242 West 76th St. (just off
Broadway) 1-800-833-9622, which is perfectly adequate.

We somewhat prefer the Belleclaire Hotel, 250 W. 77th at Broadway
www.hotelbellclaire.com , but only the rooms with shared baths seem to
fit your price range.

The Upper West Side has lots of nice restaurants and also Zabars and other
markets and food places, and these hotels are close to the American Museum
of Natural History and to buses and the subway. It is a quick trip across
the park to the Upper East Side museums.

Another option would be to try www.quikbook.com and look for bargains.
Click on Find/Book a Hotel in the top menu bar on the web page and you will
have a search screen where you can specify price range.

Finally, since this is a museum list ... please make note of a couple of
small and relatively new museums that are worth a visit: The Lower East
Side Tenement Museum http://www.tenement.org/ (they have a virtual tour
online http://www.tenement.org/Virtual_Tour/index_virtual.html ), and the
Neue Galerie http://neuegalerie.org/neuemain.html (which has a nice cafe).
