POST-GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
Archaeological Conservation

The Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE)
announces a post-graduate fellowship in archaeological conservation. This
one-year fellowship begins in fall 2003 and includes a stipend of $22,000
with an additional travel/research allowance of $2,000; health insurance is
available.

The fellowship is a component of SCMRE's archaeological conservation
program, which seeks to foster the integration of conservation and
archaeological research through collaborative materials-based studies,
collections care training, and fieldwork participation. The program
utilizes SCMRE's analytical resources, linkages to other SI collections and
field-oriented collaborations, to cultivate the fellow's professional skills
in the preservation and study of archaeological materials. During the year,
the fellow will be expected to carry out at least one technical
study/research project (directed toward archaeological object materials or
their conservation issues) and to develop a workshop that can be offered to
an archaeological audience. Participation in one field-based archaeological
project is anticipated.

Eligibility: The applicant should be a recent graduate of a recognized
conservation training program or have equivalent training and experience.
The applicant should have a commitment to the conservation of archaeological
materials, and a proven record of research, writing ability, and English
language skills. Some fieldwork experience is preferred. Fellowships are
awarded without regard to age, sex, race, or nationality of the applicant.

Application Procedure:
An applicant must submit the following materials in English.
    * Transcripts of both undergraduate and graduate courses of academic
study with an explanation of the evaluation system if it is not equivalent
to that of the US;
    * A curriculum vitae including basic biographical information,
current and permanent addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses;
    * At least two examples of pertinent publications, lectures, or
other written material;
    * A cover letter presenting the applicant's intent in applying for
the fellowship, research interests and workshop topic suggestions;
    * Two letters of recommendation from conservation professionals
familiar with the applicant's work.
The application package should be sent to:
