Mountmakers
Two Temporary, Full-Time Positions
Approximately October 15, 2002 through January 14, 2003

This Fall, the Asian Art Museum will begin moving from Golden Gate Park to
a new expanded facility in San Francisco's Civic Center.  The spectacular
conversion of a 1917 Beaux Arts-style building will showcase nearly
twenty-five hundred works from the museum's world renowned collection.
Spread over twenty-nine thousand square feet in thirty-three separate
galleries, the treasures on view will include colorful paintings, ancient
stone and bronze sculpture, intricately carved jades, delicate ceramics,
and embroidered textiles.

The Asian Art Museum is seeking two skilled, resourceful individuals with
metalworking and art installation experience to assist in the preparation
of the collection for the move.  The Mountmakers will fabricate mounts for
the display of art objects in these galleries. This is an exciting
opportunity to participate in the creation of a New Asian for the City of
San Francisco!

Examples of Duties

1.   Consults with the lead Mountmaker on design and mode of fabrication of
mounts.

2.   Fabricates mounts for the display of art objects utilizing steel,
aluminum, brass, acrylic, and other polymers.

3.   Insures that mounts are unobtrusive and protect the object from damage
owing to earthquakes and other environmental forces.

4.   Consults with museum conservators in order to design and fabricate
mounts made from materials which will ensure the preservation of art on
display and in storage.

5.   Assists other preparation staff in the movement, storage,
installation, deinstallation and display of objects.

Physical Working Conditions

Ø    Physical agility, good vision, and manual dexterity are required to
fabricate mounts, move art and operate tools/equipment.

Ø    Involves medium to heavy work requiring lifting, carrying, and moving
materials, tools and equipment, and finished exhibit and display fixtures
and furniture.

Ø    Many involve exposure to chemicals, fumes, heat, dust and toxins.
Required to wear safety glasses and mask when necessary for safety.


Minimum Qualifications

·    One year of training and/or work experience in metalworking.

·    One year of art installation experience; or an equivalent combination
of education, training, and experience.

·    Skill in the use of welding machines and torches, and in the use and
care of various power tools such as grinders, drills, band saws, milling
machines, lathes, etc.

·    Skill in metal fabrication using versatile sculptural and structural
sensibilities.

·    Knowledge of:  standard tools, practices, methods used in mountmaking;
painting and color matching; techniques of art handling, installation, and
deinstallation.

·    Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 75 lbs.; to physically
handle delicate and valuable works of art with extreme care.

·    Ability to: demonstrate creativity and innovation in designing mounts;
problem solve and function efficiently under pressure with conflicting
demands; work from sketches and follow oral descriptions or instructions;
successfully articulate mountmaking concepts to coworkers.

Compensation

$18.28/hr.
Due to the temporary nature of this position, it does not include a
benefits package.
