Hi All
This is one of those "Agree and Disagree" things. I can agree with what
Jeff said up to the "A design firm can wait until the capital campaign is
underway."

In order for your capital campaign to work correctly you will need to show
others your intent. A Building and Exhibit Master Plan (the first part of
planning) does exactly that. It will pictorially show your vision of what
is intended by indicating conceptual building plans, elevations and
renderings and at the same time show others the exhibit intent by again
showing some plans and renderings of exhibitry areas. This does not show
the final exhibitry as it has not yet been designed but does pictorially
show the overall intent.

There are few dreamers in this world but many followers. The dreamers need
to show the followers the intent to get them on board. To coin an old
phrase a picture is worth a thousand words. Good graphics and concept
sketches can really get the excitement going. That’s the key to a capital
campaign. Get everyone on the same page and vision.

I think this might be what you are referring to with your comment of "But
you will need initial drawings sooner, rather than later. You also may want
to flesh out ideas about content and include them in the package you take
to funding sources."

When you contract for Building and Exhibit Master Plan, you do not
necessarily have to contract the entire job. The complete design package
can be broken down into phases so that it does not empty your bank.

Jeff's last statement is absolutely correct. Everything is fluid and
changes do occur.

> I'm involved in a similar situation and you probably will find that it's
more involved and complex than intitially thought. You may want to
assemble a board first and then hire a consultant to guide you through a
feasibility study. Make sure the consultant understands your concept and
mission statements. Feasibility studies can cost anywhere from a few
thousand to several tens of thousands of dollars. But they do provide you
with a look at the needs of your community and the likelihood of your
success. On the basis of that study and your concept/mission statements,
you can then take the "package" to funding sources for seed money. That
seed money will then fund continued planning and the launch of a capital
campaign. A business plan should also be initiated as soon as possible,
but it may have to wait until the feasibility study is complete. A design
firm can wait until the capital campaign is underway.

may want to flesh out ideas about content and include them in the package
you take to funding sources. This is a fluid process and you can expect
many changes along the way.
