UNIQUE PUBLICATION
GENUINE BUDDHIST LITERATURE

The "Secret Visionary Autobiography" of the Fifth Dalai Lama, Ngag-dbang blo-bzang rgya-mtsho
(1617-1682), is an outstanding example of Tibetan spirituality. It contains both records
of many years of visionary experiences and collections of precepts for the practice of some
of the most esoteric rituals of Tibetan Buddhism.

This "Autobiography" is subdivided into three parts: the records of visions
("Mother"), the instructions on rituals ("Son") and the illustrations. Although the illustrated
text of the "Autobiography" kept in the Institute of Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg, Russia
is the most complete of the few still in existence, no part of it has ever previously been published
or seen outside of Russia.

However now, for the first time, 65 texts and 59 plates of illustrations are made available
on CD-ROM.

The text on the history of transmission of the "Autobiography" attests to the fact that this
cycle of works was transmitted, studied and practised through centuries. It was originated
by the most celebrated of the dGe-lugs-pa hierarchs and primarily maintained within the tradition
of the rNying-ma-pa School, through a lineage of eminent rNying-ma-pa lamas. In spite of this,
it became a series of esoteric practices of the dGe-lugs-pa School (and not only that of the
rNying-ma-pa) and was spread within all the areas of dGe-lugs-pa religious domination. However,
the transmission of the "Secret Visions" was always confined to a narrow circle of advanced disciples.

Studies on the "Autobiography" started in 1988 with the publication by Samten Karmay of the "Secret Visions"
(Serindia Publishers). The publication on CD-ROM of the St. Petersburg manuscript provides a considerable
quantity of new material indispensable for scholars of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism.

Author of the publication Dr. Vladimir Uspensky.

Publisher: Thesa Co., St Petersburg.
