MEET PIPER WYNN SEVERANCE

My name is Piper Wynn Severance. I graduated in 2000
from Essex University, UK, with an MA in Gallery
Studies (awarded with distinction). I also hold a BA
in Art History from UC Santa Cruz.

While majoring in Art History at UC Santa Cruz I was
introduced to the Suprematist art of Kasmir Malevich,
and my life was profoundly changed. At the 0.10
exhibition, Malevich displayed his Black Square in the
top corner of the room; a place traditionally reserved
in Russia for religious icons. I was amazed that the
mere placement could add such gravity and
revolutionary weight to this beautiful abstract
painting. A whole world of curatorial decisions and
possibilities opened up before me!

I focused my educational training on the development
of exhibition making and display. From the politically
manipulative “Degenerate Art” exhibition of the Nazis
to the illuminating art of Fred Wilson, I examined how
curatorial choice and display effected meaning.

Through my studies, I formulated the career goal I am
pursuing today: the creation of exciting, intelligent
and innovative exhibitions.

My MA in Gallery Studies gave me an exceptional
background in both the theoretical and practical
issues involved in exhibition making. My master‘s
degree
exhibition Vibrations: the sound of art examined the
ways that contemporary artists are exploring the
interrelationship of the visual and the sonic.

Visitors were encouraged to engage with and play the
sound sculptures and installations displayed. The
other half of the work looked at how various artists
visually interpret sound. The exhibition was very
highly received by the external examiner, a curator at
the Victoria and Albert Museum.

My master’s degree was awarded with distinction based
on this exhibition.

A year out of grad school, I find myself working as
the Gallery Coordinator for a commercial fine art
gallery. The emphasis is on sales, and many of the
professional standards I was taught are not upheld. I
have a great deal of responsibility, and it has been a
very valuable learning experience. However, I know
that this is not where I want to be.

A mentor can help me channel the energy and potential
I feel into a productive and rewarding career.

A CV can be made available to any who have an interest
in providing me guidance.
