Some of my favorites over the past couple of years:

"Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horowitz. A really entertaining and
insightful look by a journalist into Civil War reenacting and the still living and
breathing presence of the Civil War in the American South.

"Dragon Hunter" by Charles Gallencamp. An in-depth look at the life of Roy
Chapman Andrews and his adventures on whaling ships, Mongolia and China, and the
American Museum of Natural History. They just don't make scholar/adventurers
like this any more!

"Founding Brothers" by Joseph Ellis. I loved this book! A really innovative
and very approachable look at early American history and the tangled lives and
interactions of the Founding Fathers. Ellis really takes you inside of the
tenor and tone of the times and personalities.

"In Search of the Old Ones" by David Roberts. An adventure/history writer
takes you on his explorations in the Four Corners in search of the Anasazi. Along
the way you encounter cowboy archaeologists, defaced rock art, thoughtful
scholars and interpreters, native americans, pristine artifacts, and a trek with
two lamas...great blend of adventure and history.

And as a conservator I feel obliged to throw something in about science and
materials!

"Stuff: The Materials the World is Made Of" by Ivan Amato. This one of the
most engaging and approachable looks at the history of man and materials. A
great primer for anyone interested in the history of technology and materials
science from prehistory to the present day.

Cheers!
Dave
